Barracuda Networks
Networks, Inc. is a privately held company providing firewall products (firewall is a device or set of devices configured to permit, deny, encrypt, or proxy all computer traffic between different security domains based upon a set of rules or other criteria) to block e-mail spam, viruses, spyware, load balancing and instant messaging software.
Networks was established in 2002. The company's first offering and premier product is the anti-spam appliance named Spam Firewall — a dedicated firewall computer running a hardened Linux-based system. Released to the market in October 2003, it has since won several awards from trade publications. The product accepts SMTP traffic and analyzes the source and content of each inbound e-mail message, then makes a decision to allow, tag, quarantine, or block. Allowed and tagged traffic is passed on to the next SMTP system in the path, generally an organization's MTA. Several models are available to support different levels of traffic and numbers of domains. Systems can cluster to allow for increased capacity and/or fault tolerance.
The Spam Firewall utilizes twelve defense layers to protect downstream mail servers from exposure to spam and viruses. The first five defense layers are connection management layers, including Denial-of-service attack prevention, rate control, IP reputation analysis,
